Costs and grants
What will it cost you? Septic upgrade and sewer calculator
An ENR septic upgrade near Florida's Indian River Lagoon averaged more than $22,000 in Brevard in 2025, and a sewer connection runs about $7,000 to $25,000 in Indian River County's estimates. What it costs
| Fix | Cost figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| ENR septic upgrade | Average more than $22,000 in Brevard (2025), up from $18,000 in 2020 | Brevard County via WUSF |
| Gravity sewer connection | $7,000 to $15,000 owner cost | Indian River County via WQCS |
| Low-pressure (pump) sewer connection | $15,000 to $25,000 owner cost | Indian River County via WQCS |
| Indian River County sewer connection fee | $3,835 (2025 rates) | County rate booklet |
Your own price depends on the lot, soil, water table, distance to the sewer line, the system type and the permit. Only a written quote from a licensed contractor is a real number.

Grants that cut the bill
- Brevard: $6,000 to $20,000 per parcel toward an ENR upgrade, and up to $12,000 (gravity) or $24,000 (with a pump) toward a sewer connection, approved before work starts. Brevard septic grant.
- Indian River County: up to $15,000 toward a sewer connection where sewer is available, announced; the application portal had not opened as of November 1, 2026. Indian River County help.
- St. Lucie and Volusia: no open homeowner grant for the lagoon area; help comes as utility payment plans, SHIP and USDA repair money.
Every program, with amounts, status and a quiz that shows which ones fit you, is on the septic grants hub. The state's lagoon grant money goes to counties, cities and utilities, not to homeowners directly.

Paying for the rest
- County and utility plans: some sewer projects let owners pay over time through an assessment, for example North Hutchinson Island in St. Lucie County, or through utility financing.
- Contractor payment: in Brevard the county can pay an approved grant to your contractor directly, so you only finance the difference.
- Your own loan: a home equity loan or line of credit is a common route; compare the rate and fees with any program offer first.
Since July 2024, Florida's PACE law also covers septic upgrades and sewer connections, repaid on the property tax bill where your county or city allows it. Compare every option on septic financing and loans.
The calculator's monthly figure uses the rate and term you type in. It is an example, not a loan offer.
